What is the UPSC Civil Services Examination?

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive exam conducted annually to recruit candidates for various civil services of the Government of India. It is conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims) – Objective type

  2. Main Examination (Mains) – Descriptive type

  3. Personality Test (Interview)

Each stage tests different skills—knowledge, analytical ability, writing skills, and personality traits.


UPSC Exam Structure


1. Preliminary Examination

  • Purpose: Screening test

  • Papers:

    • General Studies Paper I – Current affairs, history, polity, geography, economy, environment, etc.

    • CSAT (Paper II) – Comprehension, logical reasoning, mathematics (qualifying with 33% marks)

Note: Prelims marks are not counted for the final ranking but are essential to qualify for the Mains.

2. Mains Examination

  • Papers: 9 papers in total (2 qualifying + 7 merit-based)

    • Essay

    • General Studies I-IV

    • Two Optional Subject Papers

    • Two qualifying papers in English and a regional language

This stage evaluates an aspirant’s depth of knowledge, critical thinking, and articulation.


3. Personality Test (Interview)

  • Conducted by a panel of experts

  • Tests candidate’s personality traits, communication, and administrative suitability

  • Maximum marks: 275


Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Indian (for IAS, IPS)

  • Age: 21 to 32 years (General category; relaxations available for reserved categories)

  • Educational Qualification: Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university

  • Number of Attempts:

    • General: 6

    • OBC: 9

    • SC/ST: Unlimited (up to age limit)
